Review: Ken's House of Pancakes Hilo

ken's house of pancakes

When I was a kid, my standard order at Ken’s House of Pancakes was the Really Real Snow Crab Omelette (snow crab, green onions, hollandaise) or the Da Braddah Omelette (bacon, ham, Portuguese sausage, green onions, and cheese). Both are $20 today, and all omelets come with your choice of rice or hashbrowns PLUS pancakes or toast. You can also get cottage cheese, tomatoes, or pineapple in place of the pancakes/toast. Pratt’s new home is adjacent to Shriver’s two homes, each valued at over over $10 million, carving out a family compound of sorts in the neighborhood. Ungar has designed several multimillion-dollar mansions, including modern farmhouses, in Los Angeles.

How the baby boomer ‘wealth effect’ is driving inflation: it’s ‘the richest retiring generation we’ve ever had’

During Mrs. Island Miler’s inaugural visit to Ken’s House of Pancakes, she went with the Really Real Snow Crab Omelette with rice and pancakes. I wanted to branch out and try something different, opting for the fried noodles. Ellwood, born as Jon Nelson Burke in Texas in 1922, was an informally trained but influential Los Angeles–based architect whose career spanned the early 1950s through the mid-1970s, according to a biography by Architectuul.

Back in those days, I had the extreme privilege of being able to go to Maui or the Big Island at least once a year with my family. The choice to eat meat or to go vegan or vegetarian is highly personal. Some come to the decision primarily with the hope of preventing cruelty to animals. Others choose the diet for individual health reasons or for the environment.

In fact, the primary flavor profiles here were salt and black pepper. When I was a kid, I LOVED going to Ken’s House of Pancakes with my family whenever we visited Hilo. Learning that Mrs. Island Miler has never been, I made it a point to get here during our last trip to the area. Alas, things weren’t quite what I remember them to be.

ken's house of pancakes

Trips to Hilo often included one or more visits to Ken’s House of Pancakes for brunch, with their tasty omelets, fluffy pancakes, and decadent coconut syrup. It was the perfect start to a day, which would usually include a visit to a black sand beach or adventures in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. But the experience often leaves me unsatisfied. It’s also how I come across recipes I wouldn’t have thought to put into a search field. Ken’s House of Pancakes is a dying breed of restaurant – a true old-school diner that hasn’t changed much over the years.

A well-loved cookbook is a well-worn cookbook. We shouldn’t be afraid to get our cookbooks dirty. “Cookbook sales in the U.S. grew 8% year-on-year between 2010 and 2020, with sales numbers boosted even further by the pandemic,” wrote Kate Gibbs in a 2022 story in the Guardian.

Ken’s House of Pancakes

With new bosses came fresh modifications to an already booming industry. The Chings decided to convert the Tapa Room to incorporate more seating for diners. They also put a new roof on the building and increased the menu dramatically. Eventually, the Ken’s logo, and the roof and road signs also got a modernized update. In 1990, there were discussions of the possibility of putting the well-known eatery up for sale.

If you’re staying in Hilo, it’s pretty hard to miss Ken’s House of Pancakes. They’re at the intersection of Mamaloha Highway/Hawai’i Belt Road, Kamehameha Ave, and Banyan Drive. This places them across Queen Liliuokulani Gardens and the Naniloa Golf Course from Hilo’s hotel district, several blocks down from the Edith Kanakaole Stadium, and near the threshold of Hilo International Airport’s Runway 8. It is especially potent when thinking back to one’s halcyon days as a kid – not a care in the world except for what video game you’ll play after finishing your homework, whether your VCR will tape the show you scheduled it to, etc.

It was on a golf course in Honolulu where Lindberg Ching discovered this information. It just so happened that one of his golfing buddies was also Bonnie Twitchell’s realtor. Realizing that this was an opportunity that he could not pass up, he and his wife, Frances Ching, made the decision to purchase the iconic restaurant. He then enlisted his daughter, Debra Ching-Maiava and Ric Maiava, to move to Hilo and manage the budding business. Through collaboration with public and private industry, Destination Hilo strives to increase visitor satisfaction, extend length of stay, and provide innovative visitor activities offering unique Hawaiian experiences.

During our conversations leading up to our trip, I learned that, despite being there several times as a kid, Mrs. Island Miler had never been to Ken’s House of Pancakes. It was also the only restaurant in Hilo (at least, in the before times) that was open 24/7 and known throughout the islands for its pancakes and omelets. Chef and farmer Mollie Engelhart, after specializing in serving vegan food at her Sage Vegan Bistro locations, made the risky decision to change the orientation of her restaurants in the name of regenerative agriculture. As Stephanie Breijo reported this week, she is renaming her restaurants Sage Regenerative Kitchen & Brewery and will add some meat dishes to the menu from animals raised using regenerative farming practices.

Overall, I’m glad we paid Ken’s House of Pancakes a visit. It was nice to check the place out again – it’s been at least 20 years since I’ve last been – and to introduce it to Mrs. Island Miler. Sadly, I feel like the quality has diminished a little here, though the cuisine is far better than the stuff we had at our hotel.

When she showed off the pristine page, it looked like it was only missing a few batter splotches to break in the book. My other complaints with the fried noodles were more personal, with the largest complaint here being the use of green bell peppers. Who the hell puts green pepper in fried noodles?! I also wasn’t a fan of the celery or carrots in here.

It can be pretty jarring if you’ve never been in a place like this. However, what caught me off-guard (I guess I never noticed as a kid) is that the restaurant is open-air – there’s no a/c here. I suppose this wasn’t as big an issue 30 years ago when our weather was cooler, but it gets pretty hot nowadays, as was the case during our visit. In 2004, the house changed hands to its last owners, couple Sam and Hilda Newman-Rolfe. Even though I have hundreds of cookbooks — so many that I have stacks on every step up the staircase in my front hall — I frequently find myself online looking for recipe ideas or basic cooking information.

Ken’s House of Pancakes opened its doors in 1971 under the joint ownership of Ken Pruitt and Bonnie Twitchell. It became the first, and only 24-hour business on the East-side of the Big Island. Success soon followed the opening, with the appeal of being able to sit down and eat at any time of day or night! Also aiding in the success of the restaurant was the attached Tapa Room Cocktail Lounge, allowing adults to unwind with a tasty cocktail before, during, and after dinner.

He gained fame through his eye-catching designs and quirky personality, bolstered by his ambitions in acting, modeling, and self-promotion. He designed several homes in Los Angeles, and the destruction of one of the few that remain is part of the considerable backlash. The move to demolish came shortly after Pratt purchased the mid-century home in an off-market sale for $12.5 million in January 2023. The house is located in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, across the street from Pratt’s mother-in-law, former first lady of California Maria Shriver. The historic house will be replaced by a modern farmhouse designed by architect Ken Ungar, Architectural Digest reported, and is now in the early stages of construction. Until its completion, Pratt is waiting it out with his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger, in a $32 million estate in Los Angeles’ Pacific Palisades neighborhood.

The green onions provide a nice, light touch of freshness to what is otherwise a decadent omelet. I asked Veggiekins website founder Remy Morimoto Park for one of her go-to recipes from her book “Sesame, Soy, Spice” and she named the scallion pesto. It’s a subrecipe made with miso, basil and green onions from her “very green beans” recipe. She says it’s great on pasta or anything else you’d use with pesto.

“Meatballs don’t always have to be meat,” writes Paola Briseño-Gonzalez in her latest story for L.A. Then she gives us a recipe she developed for brothy shrimp meatballs with Sungold tomatoes. On Sunday at the festival, “Koshersoul” author Michael Twitty and “Fieldwork” author and Michelin chef Iliana Regan had an impromptu conversation at the booth about the challenges of writing their very intimate memoirs. Elizabeth Poett said her go-to recipe from her “Ranch to Table” book is blueberry yogurt pancakes.

Still cookbook crazy in a digital world, plus the Koreatown bakery where fans wait up to two hours for cake, a new croissant contender, new brunch and lunch picks, and why a vegan restaurant will start serving meat. Nowadays, Ken’s House of Pancakes is still owned by the Ching Family. It is still managed by Debra and Ric, and is still pumping out delicious meals including pancakes, burgers, fries, omelets, milkshakes, and other local favorites. It’s the good food, great staff and awesome community that keeps this place going. Ken’s is, was, and will continue to be a mainstay not just in Hilo, but throughout the entire Big Island.

In my opinion, fried noodles can have onion, cabbage, and maybe bean sprouts. All other vegetables in local-style fried noodles are an abomination. As far as service goes, we went during the after-lunch lull. There weren’t that many employees around, so it took a while for us to get seated and whatnot despite the restaurant being empty.

Food memoirs and cookbooks are consistently among the strongest areas of the book industry. Our signature items include the Apple Pancake, a single large pancake smothered with sautéed apples and cinnamon sugar baked to perfection, to create a deliciously rich cinnamon sugar glaze. In contrast to the omelet, the fried noodles were a complete disappointment. While the noodles retained a nice al dente texture, they were quite wet/oily. Worse, though, is that the entire dish was incredibly salty. The HUGE slices of Spam scattered throughout didn’t help with this.

However, there are more exciting options in Hilo nowadays, so I wouldn’t automatically return here. But I wouldn’t rule out a return visit, either. I’d probably stick with the omelets and pancakes if I do come back, though. It wasn’t quite as good as I remember, but that could be due to my now different taste and the rose-tinted glasses effect. There are still chunks of snow crab leg meat in there, along with smaller strands of meat, and I like that the omelet, while fully cooked, wasn’t overdone.

Located along Alki Beach in West Seattle, Harry’s Beach House is the cousin of Harry’s Fine Foods located on Capitol Hill and reflects the same spirit of welcome and home. The Beach House imagines a kind of surf and turf chic that is both nostalgic and fresh. Banquettes flanked by kerosene lamps invite guests to take off their shoes and pull their feet up while they appreciate food and drinks that are at once familiar and elevated. Chef/owner Julian Hagood extends a culinary welcome that makes everyone feel at home. Fall’s in full swing, but it looks like there’s a new reason to head out to the beach.

Harry’s Fine Foods is our flagship restaurant located in Seattle’s beloved Capitol Hill neighborhood. Fine Foods specializes in connecting guests with the Pacific Northwest’s many growers, makers, and purveyors.

Inspired by 1970s Japanese city pop, Harry's House is a synth-pop, new wave, pop rock and pop-funk album. Before you get judgy and start thinking that this is just some soulless corporate promotion, you know that the decor is more than just Rams chic. The interview was originally rumored to have been filmed at Harry and Meghan’s Montecito house, but Oprah confidante and “CBS This Morning” host Gayle King told reporters the interview was shot at “a friend’s house,” according to the Daily Mail. The home is also near their known celebrity friends, Ellen DeGeneres and, of course, Winfrey, who courted the ex-royals for years to land the interview. Harry and Markle had previously been staying in “Madea” character actor Tyler Perry’s Los Angeles mansion before moving about an hour and a half away to Santa Barbara, California.

Given how guarded teams usually are about the draft, it's refreshing to see a franchise open its doors to turn it into a party. Nonetheless, Cara's parents, Charles and Pandora, had their own theory about the house fire ... Blaming a rogue powerline as the culprit, especially after a very windy night in SoCal. It also comes complete with a two-bed guest house, perfect for Markle’s mom, Doria. Harry's House is the third studio album by English singer and songwriter Harry Styles, released on 20 May 2022 by Columbia Records and Erskine. The album was largely written and recorded during 2020 and 2021 and has been noted as Styles' most introspective work.

Owner Julian Hagood has created an indoor/outdoor, inclusive dining atmosphere with a diverse food and beverage menu. According to a preliminary investigation released Friday by the Committee to Protect Journalists, nearly 100 journalists have been killed covering the war in Gaza. Assuming the Rams don't trade out of the first round, they will be picking on the first day of the draft for the first time since 2016 when Jared Goff was the No. 1 overall pick.

If they hold onto the pick it will be the first time the franchise has made a first round selection since they took Jared Goff No. 1 in 2016. It will also be the first time that the team has picked in the first round since Sean McVay became head coach in 2017 so you can understand why the team is kind of excited. Reports surfaced this morning that the interview was filmed at King’s house, but the New York Post was not able to confirm these reports.

Vintage furnishings and coolers invite memories of both corner store and grandma’s house. And a collection of basket lights clusters to create a warm center of the long community table at the heart of the restaurant. Harry's Beach House is a great restaurant if you're spending time in West Seattle, and the coastal kind of menu is pretty customizable to any type of mood. In addition to McVay and general manager Les Snead, the draft house will typically have celebrity guests. Eric Dickerson, Rebel Wilson, Erin Andrews and Brody Jenner were photographed at the venue in 2021. The Rams have run their draft out of a draft house since 2021, though they referred to last year's location in the San Fernando Valley as a "draft lab."

In August 2020, a source told Us Weekly that, while they could've asked Prince Charles for financial help, Meghan and Harry decided to purchase their new home independently. Per Us Weekly's source, "Harry could’ve asked [Prince] Charles to contribute toward the cost of the house, but he chose not to ... Getting his dad financially involved would result in the royals having control over him. It would mean going backwards." In a veritable sea of solid dining options, this Portland-based sushi chain’s U Village location stands out not only for its signature rolls and ultra-fresh nigiri, but also for its sustainable seafood sourcing. Though it’s hard to bypass the fish, the wagyu beef burger is a sleeper hit, and not just among the raw-fish averse. Beach-chic may not be a vibe that Seattle generally excels at, but this Alki Beach haunt knocks it out of the park with water views and zero kitsch. Cocktails are mandatory, especially inspired concoctions like a purple-hued gin and tonic made with butterfly pea flower.

Their estate’s proximity to Markle’s mom was ideal during a time when Markle was struggling with her mental health. Former royals Prince Harry, 36, and Meghan Markle, 39, gave a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey on Sunday, March 7, about why the pair stepped back from the royal limelight and moved to California. Meghan and Harry sat in front of their bird nest prints from Barloga Studios for the TIME100 Talks. Behind them, viewers spotted a selection of books, some fresh foliage, a candle, and a decorative stone.

King was not previously known to own a home in Montecito and has camped out in Oprah’s guest house on trips from New York City. The 14,500sq ft, or 1,350sq m, main house sits on 7.4ac of grounds that include a pool, tennis court, tea house and children's cottage. The couple's new neighbours in the upmarket Montecito district just outside the city, about 150km from Los Angeles, include Oprah Winfrey, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ellen DeGeneres and Ariana Grande. With glass doors that roll up, and a patio dotted with fire pits, Tukwila’s Hotel Interurban restaurant is comfortable regardless of our typical temperamental weather. — but dinner necessitates a knife and fork, with hefty plates like a 42-day dry-aged ribeye or cedar plank-roasted salmon. A collection of sea-themed oil paintings set the tone for the marine environment on the entry wall.

We’re bringing you the best of the Pacific Northwest directly from local makers, growers, and purveyors. Our menu is seafood-focused, featuring the freshest of what’s in-season and caught right here in Washington. One organizer complained that the White House Correspondents' Association - which represents the hundreds of journalists who cover the president - largely has been silent since the first weeks of the war about the killings of Palestinian journalists.

Harry’s Fine Foods — the chill bistro that has been slinging comfort food in Capitol Hill since 2016 — opened its West Seattle spinoff Harry’s Beach House today on Alki Avenue. The menu brings over some fan favorites from the original spot (including its popular Harry’s burger), with some rotating seasonal offerings using locally sourced ingredients. Brunch dishes include poached eggs on roasted delicata squash, borscht, and cornmeal pancakes, while dinner features lamb riblettes and Salish black cod with smoked sunchokes and huckleberry jus. Their five-acre estate also boasts rose gardens, century-old olive trees, an outdoor pizza oven, pool, playground, vegetable garden, tennis court, a two-bedroom guest house, a tea house and a children’s house, Page Six previously reported. As Sean McVay prepares to make a first-round pick in the NFL draft for the first time as a head coach, the Los Angeles Rams are setting up shop in a luxurious draft house for this weekend's event.

Start off dinner with a dozen on the half shell oysters paired with lemon and mignonette. This light starter pairs well with the Pink Drink No 22, poured with vodka, maraschino liqueur, pamplemousse, rosemary, lemon and cava. The deviled eggs are another great sharable for the table; this classic soft egg dish is taken to new heights at Harry’s Beach House, topped with a smoked trout caviar, aioli and pimentón.

More than two dozen journalists in Gaza wrote a letter last week calling on their colleagues in Washington to boycott the dinner altogether. Protest organizers said they wanted to bring attention to the high numbers of Palestinian and other Arab journalists killed by Israel's military since the war began in October. Kelly O'Donnell, president of the correspondents' association, opened the event by reminding the audience of the important work that journalists do but noting that the dinner is happening at "a complex moment for our nation," and in a decisive election year. "Western media we see you, and all the horrors that you hide," crowds chanted at one point. With hundreds of protesters rallying against the war in Gaza outside the event and concerns over the conflict and humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the perils for journalists covering the conflict, the war hung over this year's event.

Cost to Paint Exterior of House in Los Angeles, California

Concrete foundations are porous and should be sealed and primed before painting with paint formulated explicitly for concrete. Painters charge $150 to $300 to paint a front door and the exterior frame. Consider working with a company like GreatBuildz that performs thorough painter screening and provides personalized introductions to reputable Los Angeles and SoCal painters. It is not wise to randomly select a painting service from an advertisement in junk mail or a door flyer.

Polishing Labor Estimates

One of the mistakes people make (which costs them more than it should) is waiting too long to repaint the house. This written agreement is legally binding and will ensure you get what you pay for. The contract should stipulate what the painter will do throughout the project.

Whole House Painting Cost by Size

Especially for homes with wood sidings, pests like termites and carpenter ants are a real concern. House painting is the perfect opportunity to inspect every inch of the home for potential damage before it’s too advanced. Applying paint will shield the home from insects, and some types of paints are even formulated to be insect-resistant. Painting a home’s exterior doesn’t just improve its appearance and curb appeal, although that is a huge benefit. Applying fresh paint can increase home value, provide a layer of protection against weather, and even extend the life of the siding. Old paint can look discolored or faded, or it can begin to chip and peel.

Making Repairs

If the siding is damaged, it will need to be repaired or replaced. One advantage of painting engineered wood siding is that often, it has already been primed. This means that the overall cost stays on the low end, about $1 to $2 per square foot, because of the labor and materials saved. Homeowners can expect to spend between $1.20 to $2.70 per square foot to paint a concrete exterior. Porous concrete typically needs a primer to help the paint adhere, so $2 to $7 per square foot may be a more accurate estimate.

If you live in a home this size, you can expect to pay between $6,000 to $8,000 to paint the interior and between $3,000 and $7,700 to paint the exterior. Painting the entire house from the inside out costs $9,000 to $15,700. The average labor cost to paint a house exterior is $4,800 for a typical 2,500 square ft. two-story house, with many homeowners paying between $4,080 to $5,340 on average.

Painting the exterior of your home gives its curb appeal a huge boost. Painting the interior helps you modernize and beautify your home by completing projects like bathroom renewals, kitchen redos, new floors, and upgraded hardware. Remodeling Expenses provides homeowners with accurate cost information on home services and level the playing field for consumers and service professionals. We aim to have data on all US zip codes, so homeowners from all over the country can lookup accurate and up to date pricing information. Ask for itemized bids so you can tell if lower offers include fewer services, and request contracts that protect you from cost overruns. If your budget is tight, here are a few tips to help you trim the cost of a professional project.

Cost to Paint Interior by Room

Krall has read reports estimating an ROI of 152% on exterior paint jobs and 107% on interior paint jobs. You may not think about your home’s exterior paint very often, but it is definitely a project that will crop up every decade or so. Whether you’re hiring a single contractor or an entire paint crew, ask whether you can provide the paint and/or other supplies. You can often avoid a markup or extra time (labor costs) if you’re willing to go get the paint you want yourself.

Factors that impact interior house painting costs.

A job that would last as long as 6 days with rollers can be finished in half that time with a sprayer, which makes a huge difference when costs are calculated by the hour. Some smaller parts of the exterior will typically still need to be painted with a brush or roller, which costs about $40 to $60 per hour. The type of paint finish can also affect the total project cost.

A 400-square-foot paint job will likely cost less than a 1,500-square-foot paint job. Painting your home is a big job, and it can be intimidating to tackle on your own. Luckily, professional painters have the expertise, experience and specialized tools to deliver high-quality and consistent results.

The first step is to calculate the square footage of the area that needs to be painted. The finished area is the perimeter of your house multiplied by its height. To calculate the paintable area, subtract the windows and doors from the finished area total. A homeowner in the United States will typically pay a professional between $2,191 and $4,505 to paint an average-sized house.

It’s worth noting that if you paint the interior of your home yourself, you will save money on labor, but it will likely not look as good as a professional paint job. Depending on the market and the expertise of the painter, labor costs vary greatly between projects. “If you hire a pro, expect to pay between $20 and $50 an hour for labor costs,” Micetich says. In every case, it’s best to compare both quality and cost when reviewing house painters’ quotes. Several individual factors impact the overall cost of your painting project, including how many coats of paint you need and the type of paint you are using.
